Reculver Towers and Roman Fort

Reculver Towers and Roman Fort is one of Kent's most striking coastal landmarks - twin 12th-century church towers rising from the clifftop east of Herne Bay, set within the walls of a Roman fort that has guarded this stretch of coast for nearly 1,800 years.

The site began life as Regulbium, a Roman fort built around AD 200 to defend the entrance to the Wantsum Channel - the sea passage that once separated the Isle of Thanet from mainland Kent. Reculver was one of the earliest of the Saxon Shore forts, a chain of fortifications along England's south and east coasts built to counter raids by Frankish and Saxon pirates. The fort was square, with stone walls reaching 7.5 metres high, and housed barracks, granaries, a bath-house and a headquarters building for a garrison of around 480 soldiers.

After the Romans withdrew from Britain in the 5th century, the site fell into disuse until AD 669, when an Anglo-Saxon monastery was founded within the existing fort walls. The monastery's church of St Mary became the parish church of Reculver, and was substantially remodelled in the 12th century - when the twin Norman towers that still dominate the skyline today were added.

Coastal erosion has shaped Reculver's story for centuries. By the early 19th century, the encroaching sea had brought the cliff edge dangerously close to the church, and most of the medieval building was demolished in 1809. The twin towers were preserved by Trinity House because they had become an important landmark for ships navigating the Thames Estuary — known to mariners as the "Two Sisters." They serve the same purpose today.

The site is now managed by English Heritage as a free, open-access historic site. Visitors can explore the ruins of St Mary's Church, walk the surviving Roman fort walls, and on selected open days during the warmer months climb the interior of the North Tower for spectacular views along the North Kent coast. Information panels explain the layout of the Roman fort, and concrete markers show the foundations of the early Saxon monastic church.

The location is exceptional. From the clifftop you can see across Reculver Country Park, along the coast towards Herne Bay and the Kentish Flats wind farm, and on clear days as far as the Isle of Thanet. The site sits at the eastern end of a long sweep of beach popular with walkers, dog walkers and metal detectorists. The Saxon Shore Way long-distance footpath passes directly through the site.

Facilities including toilets and a café are available at the adjacent Reculver Country Park (managed separately by Kent County Council). Parking is paid and located immediately beside the fort. Dogs on leads are welcome.

Reculver Towers is free to visit and accessible during daylight hours throughout the year. It's a particularly atmospheric spot at sunrise and sunset, when the towers are silhouetted against the sea - and a popular subject for photographers and artists. The site has appeared in numerous films, books and paintings, most notably J.M.W. Turner's 1809 painting "Reculvers" which depicted the church just before its demolition.

Climate change and continuing coastal erosion are an ongoing concern for the site, and English Heritage has undertaken major sea defence work in recent years to protect the towers for future generations.
