The Horsebridge Arts Centre

The Horsebridge Centre sits yards from the seafront on Horsebridge Road, a registered charity given over to art, learning and company. Across three floors, reached by lift, the galleries turn over every few weeks — painting, photography, sculpture, jewellery and mixed-media work by makers from Whitstable, Kent and well beyond.

Most exhibitions are free, and many come with a talk or a demonstration alongside. The timetable underneath is the real substance. Oils, clay, printmaking, knitting, life drawing, languages, yoga, dance, choir, theatre and creative writing run week to week, with Art Den and Family Art Club for children and Young Makers for teenagers. The Art Bank collects unwanted art materials and offers them on a pay-what-you-can basis, and Art Bank Live sessions let anyone try something without committing to a course.

Evenings bring jazz, comedy, film matinees, theatre and art talks, kept deliberately affordable. Friends of the Horsebridge, from £30 a year, get discounts on tickets and in the shop, which stocks prints, ceramics, glassware, cards and craft kits — much of it made locally — along with The Whitstable Seaside Guide.

Rooms are available to hire from £17 an hour, from a one-to-one meeting space up to a room holding 220. WiFi throughout, and the furniture set up before you arrive. One-off bookings or regular. The location does a lot of the work: thirty seconds to the beach, five minutes to the harbour, the High Street and the Old Neptune.

Parking is genuinely difficult and fills by mid-morning in summer, so the station — ten minutes on foot — or an edge-of-town car park is the sensible approach.

Twenty years in, it’s one of the addresses that makes a small seaside town punch above its cultural weight.
