The Horsebridge Arts Centre

The Horsebridge Centre opened on Horsebridge Road in April 2004, and quickly became one of the most distinctive and best-loved buildings in Whitstable. Set just yards from the seafront, on a site with a long tradition of community use - its predecessor, the old Assembly Rooms, hosted everything from political meetings to silent films - the centre carries that legacy forward as a registered charity dedicated to art, learning and connection. Over a hundred thousand visits a year pass through its doors, making it one of the busiest cultural venues on the north Kent coast.

Spread across three floors, the building is fully accessible by lift, with disabled facilities and assistance dogs welcomed throughout. The ground and first floors house the main galleries, where exhibitions change every two to three weeks. The programme is deliberately broad - painting, photography, sculpture, jewellery, mixed-media installation, conceptual work and student showcases all share the calendar. Most exhibitions are free to visit, and many include artist talks, demonstrations or workshops alongside the show. Local artists feature heavily, but the Horsebridge also brings in work from across Kent and the wider south-east, giving Whitstable visitors a window onto contemporary practice that goes well beyond the seaside-and-oysters cliché.

Beyond the galleries, the centre runs an extraordinary roster of classes, courses and clubs. On any given week you might find life drawing, beginners' watercolour, ceramics, printmaking, language classes (French, Spanish, Italian), yoga and Pilates of various intensities, choir rehearsals, dance for adults and children, theatre groups, and creative writing workshops. There are dedicated young-makers sessions for children and teenagers, an ongoing Art Bank scheme that recycles unwanted craft materials on a pay-what-you-can basis, and informal Art Bank Live drop-ins where anyone can come and try something new in a supportive group setting. The breadth is the point: the Horsebridge's stated ethos is to combat isolation and promote wellbeing through creative participation, and the timetable reflects that.

The performance side of the building is just as active. Monthly film matinees, jazz and folk gigs, comedy nights, art talks and literary events fill the calendar. Recent series have included Art Decades (talks tracing visual culture through different eras), Words in Whitstable poetry evenings, and themed wine-tasting nights with a historical or true-crime twist. Tickets are deliberately kept affordable, and Friends of the Horsebridge - annual members who support the centre with a small subscription - receive discounts and priority booking. There's also a shop on site selling work made by local makers, from prints and ceramics to jewellery and cards, with proceeds supporting both the artist and the centre.

The Revival Café on the second floor is a vegetarian and vegan eatery with sea views, serving home-baked cakes, light lunches and good coffee. It's a popular stop in its own right, even for visitors not coming in for an exhibition or class, and the upper floor is one of the better spots in town to take a break with a view.

The centre's location is part of its appeal. From the front doors it's a thirty-second walk to the beach, and the harbour, the High Street and the Old Neptune are all within five minutes. Parking is genuinely difficult - Whitstable's narrow streets and small car parks fill up by mid-morning in summer - and the Horsebridge sensibly recommends parking on the edge of town and walking in, or coming by train (Whitstable station is a ten-minute walk away) or bus.
