About Whitstable Harbour
Whitstable’s iconic harbour was established through the cathedral city Canterbury’s trade requirements. Originally the city used the River Stour as a trade way to the sea and ports of Europe but over the centuries this became more and more difficult due to increasing levels of silt in the waterways. The solution was to create a harbour in Whitstable to connect to the wider world.
Nowadays Whitstable harbour is a hotspot for trade and hospitality where visitors can absorb the tradition and culture of our picturesque seaside town. Boasting a large fish market at its centre the harbour is the best place to pick up fresh local seafood to have there or bring home to your kitchen. With plenty of dining choices the harbour is fully equipped for an array of budgets. The Lobster Shack is the harbour’s premier restaurant with breath-taking views of the ocean from its vantage point right on the coast. If its only something small you require there are plenty of oyster stalls stocked with a wide variety of seaside delicacies as well.
Whitstable Harbour is also home to an eclectic collection of independent businesses. These are located inside a quaint beach hut village brimming with friendly faces and unique, original wares. Examples of what can be found here include an artisan marzipan business where sweets come to life through creative flair, a beautiful olive and sundries shop as well as the popular Kite’s & Things, the number one stop for kids and families on their visit to the seaside, find it stocked with crabbing lines, buckets and of course kites.
