Whitstable Rocks Oyster Festival 2026

Whitstable's love affair with the oyster goes back to Roman times, and every September the town throws it a party. The Whitstable Rocks Oyster Festival returns for its fifth year from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 September 2026 — three days of live music, fresh seafood and seaside tradition, nearly all of it free. The heart of it is the Grading Shed on East Quay, a working part of the oyster fishery that turns into a free live-music stage all weekend, with food stalls, a bar and, of course, oysters. Friday opens at 5pm and builds to a fireworks display over the water at 9.15pm. Saturday is the big day: the Landing of the Oysters ceremony brings the first baskets ashore on Long Beach at 1pm, with speeches and a samba procession to follow, while the harbour hosts the famous Oyster-Eating Competition from 3pm — six oysters, fastest wins, over-18s only. As evening falls, teams take to the mud for the legendary Mud Tug o' War at 7.30pm. Sunday winds down gently, with an oyster-shucking contest at 4pm and grotter-building by candlelight on the beach. Long Beach is the family heart of the weekend, free from 11am to 4.30pm on Saturday and Sunday, with welly throwing, pirate pottery, kite flying, chalk art and treasure hunts. There's more music along the harbour at the Lobster Shack and the Oyster Shed, and at the Fringe venues, the Old Neptune and the Coach & Horses. The one ticketed event is a headline DJ set from house-music pioneer Marshall Jefferson at the East Quay Venue on Saturday 12th (£25 plus booking fee, over-18s). Everything else is free. Run as a non-profit by the Whitstable Oyster Festival Association, the oyster fishery and The Event Umbrella, the weekend closes with a community beach clean on Monday morning.
