Clock Tower and Bandstand

Herne Bay Clock Tower was erected in 1837 after a generous donation from a Mrs Ann Thwaytes, a wealthy widow of a large London grocer. She fell in love with the town whilst staying with friends and is remembered to this day by a plaque bearing her name on Herne Bay’s Central Parade. It stands as one of the traditional symbols of the town along with the Reculver towers and heron. Since construction it has had much maintenance work carried out over the years to the erosion caused by the salt water and sea gales. The original mechanism is no longer in use but is housed safely at the Herne Bay Museum and gallery for viewing.

The plaza below the Clock Tower is a public space used for the town’s events and festivals. A sunny open area that overlooks the Neptune’s Arm, a walkway sits atop the ocean for walkers to get clear 360 views of the horizon and shoreline. Just along from the tower you will see a brilliantly designed adventure playground for children. With bright colours and pirate theme this park is well maintained and perfect for parents looking for somewhere free to take the kids.

Down the way from the Clock Tower is a very unique building; with wonderful floral displays on its exterior and large open air seating at its core, the Band Stand is a classic landmark on Herne Bay’s boulevard. Here visitors can sit down with a nice meal, have a few relaxing beers or have a boogie to some fantastic live music.
