Keeping Mum

What’s a Motto With You?

Keeping Mum

By Keeping Mum

My secondary school motto was serviam… I will serve. And for much of my life I have, indeed, served. Career-wise, I’ve worked in retail, customer service and hospitality. Home life, I’m a mum with a menagerie, and it’s true sometimes I do feel more slave than equal. I’m not sure serviam suits me anymore.

Whitstable Mum Yolo motto

Considering a replacement, there are some I’ve not long deciphered and still need to think about in order to translate … FOMO, YOLO … and those cheesy “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade/G&T/grab Tequila and salt” but I wouldn’t wear the T-shirt and certainly can’t live according to that bumper-sticker philosophy.

“Don’t let the bastards get you down” is an option. “Be yourself, everyone else is already taken” *shudder*. “One person can make a difference” but probably won’t.

I’m opting for the words of the American poet, memoirist, and civil activist, Maya Angelou, “…still I rise”. Just too bloody early, every single morning.
