One of theatre's most quietly moving true stories comes to Whitstable's own theatre. 84 Charing Cross Road follows the 20-year correspondence between Helene Hanff, a sharp-tongued and hard-up writer in New York, and Frank Doel, a reserved London bookseller, which began in 1949 with a simple order for hard-to-find books and grew, letter by letter, into a deep and unlikely friendship. James Roose-Evans's much-loved stage adaptation of Helene Hanff's memoir is a warm, witty and touching play about books, connection, and the bonds that form across distance and time. The Lindley Players bring it to the stage from Wednesday 7 to Saturday 10 October 2026, with performances nightly at 7.30pm. Tickets are £12–£14, with the Playhouse bar open before the show.
